Vermentino

The white symbol of Sardinia

It arrived in Sardinia presumably through Corsica around the end of the 1800s. Vermentino found its chosen land on the island of the four Moors. Although this white grape variety is also grown in different Italian and foreign regions, only in Sardinia it can express its full potential. In all the island territory, we can find this generous vine that, even when plated in different soils, never loses its typicality despite having different personalities. By now Vermentino has become for years the most cultivated white grape variety in Sardinia and thanks to its quality has obtained the DOC denominations (the most important “Vermentino di Sardegna DOC” born in 1988) and, above all, the prestigious and unique Sardinian DOCG: the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG created in 1996. It is precisely in Gallura that this splendid fruit has found its ideal territory, above all due to the conformation of the ground with granitic weathering. The granite soul of Vermentino di Gallura creates unique wines, completely different from the Vermentini wines produced in the rest of the island. The Vermentino di Gallura shows an intense straw yellow color and bright reflections ranging from greenish to gold, intense and refined aromas of ripe fruit with white flesh, various flowers of the Mediterranean scrub (above all the broom) and aromatic herbs. Once in the mouth, it offers sensations of dense softness and fresh acidity with a finish of warm mineral notes and a light almond bitterness. This wine, emblem of Sardinian white, is the driving force of the whole wine sector of the island, together with its equal to black berry: the Cannonau.

Cannonau

The most famous Sardinian

No wine brings to mind Sardinia more than Cannonau. This black grape variety has been linking its name to the island for centuries, although its probable origins are not native. Its introduction dates back to the period of Spanish domination in the 14th century and since then this splendid vine has given joy to winegrowers and all wine lovers. Cannonau is part of the great family of the Grenaches, the most cultivated type of grape in the world as well as in Sardinia. From the North to the South of the island, Cannonau has always been excellent in terms of quality, even if its chosen area is located in the province of Nuoro. Thanks to its typicality and quality, since 1972 it has received the denomination Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, which can be produced in the rosé, red, reserve red, dry liqueur, sweet liqueur, raisin and classic versions; within the DOC we can also find 3 sub-denominations: Oliena or Nepente di Oliena, Capo Ferrato, Jerzu.

This wine is characterized by a typical and particular finesse, taste and aroma varying from area to area. It presents itself with a good structure and with olfactory taste sensations that recalls, in the different expressions, flowers or red fruits, fresh or not, which turn towards more mature notes of jam and warm spicy nuances in the reserve or liqueur type. This wine, symbol of Sardinian red, is the driving force of the whole wine sector of the island, together with its equal to white berry: the Vermentino.

Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon

Two French kings in Sardinia

In the world, there are few black grape varieties that possess the fame and quality of Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon. These two splendid varieties are among the most cultivated globally and it is no coincidence that they are part of the so-called “international vines”, for sure thanks to their unquestionable quality and adaptability to different climates and soils. Their land of choice is France, in particular the Bordeaux area, here along with other vines they become part of the famous Bordeaux blend. Although they are excellent grapes individually vinified, they become memorable if combined together: actually, their different characteristics perfectly fit together.

The softer and more immediate Merlot manages to tame the impetuosity of Cabernet-Sauvignon rich in tannins and therefore suitable for aging in wood. Being two semi-aromatic grapes, they create easily recognizable wines with well distinct and characteristic herbaceous scents. Belonging to the same family, their aromas are similar and recall flowers and red fruits such as blackcurrant, blueberries, cherries and roses that can pass from fresh to ripe depending on the wines. The maximum expression of these wines, however, is due to the refinement in wood that gives the so-called tertiary aromas, different depending on the type of wood and toasting used. Despite having a different climate and soil than France, even in Sardinia these two unique grapes give life to thick red wines that create strong emotions.
